Port Vauban in Antibes, nestled between Cannes and Nice on the French Riviera, has always been a yachting paradise. Now, with the extensive renovation of the Quai des Milliardaires (‘Billionaires’ Quay’) and the International Yacht Club d’Antibes (IYCA), it has firmly cemented its status as the Mediterranean’s premier yachting hub.

A Modern Marina with a Rich Heritage

Home to over 1,500 berths and 18 superyacht berths up to 160 meters, Port Vauban’s transformation is a blend of modern amenities and classic charm. The recent upgrades have enhanced both its aesthetic and infrastructure, making it a 21st-century port offering top-tier utilities, technical services, concierge services, and a venue for festive and sports events.

The architecture, masterminded by Atelier d’Architecture Philippe Prost, seamlessly combines traditional heritage techniques with cutting-edge construction materials like concrete, stainless steel, marble, intelligent glass, and ceramics. This fusion creates a striking visual appeal, preserving the refined look that complements the old town and Fort Carré while facing the Mediterranean horizon.

Sustainable Elegance with Kebony Wood

A standout feature of this renovation is the extensive use of Kebony Clear wood for the quay’s decking surfaces, stairs, pontoons, benches, and handrails. This environmentally friendly wood offers a knot-free appearance and a silvery patina that enhances the quay’s prestigious setting. Known for its durability and minimal maintenance requirements, Kebony wood is guaranteed to withstand the demands of an exposed marine environment for 30 years.

Kebony’s innovative technology transforms sustainable softwoods into materials with the aesthetics and durability of tropical hardwoods, helping to reduce deforestation and CO₂ emissions. The wood is infused with a bio-based liquid, making it 50% thicker and enhancing its stability, durability, and hardness—perfect for the high levels of weathering and intensive use at the quay.

Architect and Expert Insights

The architects from Atelier d’Architecture Philippe Prost were drawn to using wood strips for the large outdoor terraces, likening them to boat decks. Kebony wood was chosen for its aesthetic appeal, natural character, and exceptional durability in a marine environment.

Nina Landbø, International Sales Manager for Kebony, highlights the project’s success: “The regeneration of Quai des Milliardaires showcases the versatility of Kebony, providing a sustainable, beautiful, and high-performing wood product that will last for many years.”

A Bright Future for Port Vauban

The transformation of ‘Billionaires’ Quay’ is not just about renewing a marina but about setting a standard for sustainable luxury in the yachting world. With Kebony’s innovative wood playing a pivotal role, Port Vauban continues to lead as a top destination for yachting enthusiasts, blending heritage with modern sustainability.
