DvB New Additions: Choosing Materials for Pier 26

The principles of ecology and sustainability were at the forefront when designing Hudson River Park’s Pier 26. This required the team to think beyond the living parts of the pier, and to also focus on selecting sustainable materials for the constructed elements. Tropical hardwoods like Ipé are often selected for projects like this one. The Pier 26 team knew they wanted to weigh all their options to find an alternative to Ipé that was more environmentally supportive. This led to the selection of Kebony modified wood, a sustainable option that is equally beautiful and durable.
