Adding Deck Boards

  1. The first double-grooved deck board should be stepped in the starter row on the opposite end of the outer rim joist.
  2. To secure the board in the strip, place the groove on one side of the deck board into the clip closest to you.
  3. Starting at one end of the board, straddle the joist facing the side of the board not in the clip with the balls of your feet in the center of the board and rock forward to set the groove into the clip. Make sure the clip is fully secured in the groove. You should hear a clear, pronounced ‘click’ as the clip.
    • If the clip doesn’t engage, you can lightly bounce while standing on the board straddling the joist or tap down with a non-marring rubber mallet with a piece of scrap wood between the mallet and the board.
    • Though rare, it’s possible that the bottom groove of the Kebony Deck Board could break or crack when setting the board in the Step-Clip. If this happens, face-fasten that joist using the Pro Plug System for Kebony making sure you keep the screw at least 1 inch from the edges of the board.
  4. Once this board is in place, check for proper alignment and confirm that the board is square across all joists. Once that is confirmed you can connect the next row of strips.
  5. Step-Clip strips use a tongue and groove design for inline connection to each other. Simply slide the tongue into the groove and continue to align the Step-Clip strips on the joists.
    • The side tabs on all Step-Clip strips must be oriented on the same side of each joist and flush against the joist to allow for linking subsequent strips together.
    • Make sure the strips are straight and flat before nailing down. You may need to adjust the strips along the way to keep them aligned.
  6. Use the provided coil of roofing nails and secure 2 nails for each pair of clips located within
1” of each clip. That’s a total of 8 nails per each full Step-Clip strip.
  7. Put the next board at the end of the second row of strips. Step the board into place and check that it is square across all joists. Repeat this step until you reach the end of the deck.
  8. Once all of the strips are in place, you can step in the remaining double-grooved boards in between the boards you already placed.
