Sol Haus Retreat is a Scandinavian inspired retreat located in Union Pier, Michigan near the shores of Lake Michigan. The vision for the home is for an escape to be enjoyed in every season. A stunning pool, outdoor sauna and steam room, spa, and fire pit are a few of the incredible amenities the homeowners and guests can experience throughout the year.
Designed by Chicago-based architect Kathy Zalewski, Sol Haus Retreat offers an open and inviting floor plan. The 2,548 sq. ft. structure boasts a dramatic two-and-a-half story living space that opens to a veranda that features a grand wood burning fireplace that invites friends and family to gather within the three-season room.
Two moving glass walls blend the indoors with the outdoors, revealing the wonderment of the home’s natural surroundings and reflective waters of a 40-ft swimming pool. The exterior of Sol Haus Retreat is clad with sustainable, dually modified Kebony wood vertical tongue and groove siding, which will age into a silver-gray patina over time.
The simplistic form of the house is further highlighted by a gable metal roof. A repurposed shipping container was transformed into an outdoor sauna for a true Scandinavian spa experience. The house features five bedrooms and four bathrooms, with bedroom layouts flexible in design to accommodate either larger families who want to sleep together or a few friends who want more privacy.
The Norwegian concept of friluftsliv – outdoor living – is celebrated year-round at Sol Haus Retreat. Even as the nights get colder and the days get shorter, Sol Haus Retreat was designed to boost guests’ moods and lift their spirits.
