NEW MODERN HOME SET INTO SLOPING LANDSCAPE IN BROOKHAVEN
Designed for a Couple and Their Teenage Daughter, the Honabach House Offers Privacy and Expansive Territorial Views
Brookhaven, GA – Aug 5, 2025 – A striking modern home has risen in an Atlanta suburb, designed by award-winning architect Philip Babb.
Designed for a young professional couple, their teenage daughter, and two golden retrievers, the Honabach House is located on a quiet residential street in Brookhaven, GA, and was the only single- family residence to receive an Honor Award in the 2025 AIA Georgia Design Awards.
Situated on a 1- 1⁄4-acre site that slopes down from the street to a small creek at the rear of the property, the property’s mature hardwood trees create a beautiful, wooded area over the back half of the site.
The clients wanted a four-bedroom house, with an open kitchen, dining and living room spaces immediately adjacent to large on-grade outdoor entertainment areas. They also asked for ample storage and mechanical spaces at the lower level. Working with the natural slope of the land, Babb’s design locates the bedrooms on the upper entry level and the entertainment and storage spaces on the lower, on-grade terrace level. In the end, the design enables a two-story house to appear to be a smaller one-story house from the street entrance.
The upper-level bedrooms are organized into two parallel forms running perpendicular to the street. The guest room and a home office are positioned on the street side of the forms, and the master and daughter’s bedrooms are on the opposite sides, offering privacy and expansive woodland views. The space between the two parallel forms becomes a “see-through” entry foyer, allowing views through the house to the wooded site beyond.
From the upper-level entry an open stair leads to a large terrace-level entertainment space with continuous floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a private courtyard space and pool. Along the west side of the courtyard a large screened-in living and dining area provides protected outdoor entertainment space. Dually modifiedTM Kebony wood decking was used quite extensively at all upper
level, exterior horizontal surfaces, including the entry steps and terraces, and balconies outside all four bedrooms. “At the Honabach House, Kebony’s natural aesthetic, exceptional weather resistance and ease of maintenance made it the ideal choice for the home’s exterior decking material,” Babb said.
Kebony is the only modified wood decking in the US that is compliant with the International Building Code and International Residential Code.
